Fish finders come in different sizes and functions. When you first walk down the fish finder aisle at your favorite tackle store, you'll think, “What have I gotten myself into?” I've been there. I've spent most of my life either fishing or writing about fish, and I've been fortunate enough to make a living from it. I've put this post together to help you navigate this lane and help you find the right fish finder for your needs. Types of Fish Finders Now we have general information on the road. Let us get into why we are here. We need to find and catch more fish. First, we need a finder. Then, we needed time to go fishing. I can help you with the first part, but you're on your own with the last. Here are some of the best models that top the charts year after year, along with what makes them popular. I have added a broad range here to cover different types. Basic Models A great finder doesn't have to be the kind you screw onto a boat. Sometimes you just need a portable device that you can take with you to the beach or on a kayak. More models appear every year and make life easier for fishermen on the beach. These portable fish finders units are low cost and fit well in a tool box or backpack. There are several brands, ranging from highest to lowest. I have used both the average and the best, and the best is my favorite fish finder. While small, castable finders are great for those looking for portability, many low-profile options can be mounted on your boat that won't cost a lot and don't require an MIT degree to discover. There are models with displays ranging from 3 inches to 5 inches available for under $399. Do some research and know that you can always feel confident with big names like Humminbird, Garmin, Lawrence, and Simrad.
Mid-Range Models A high-quality mid-range fish finder will be equipped with a GPS and may include additional functions such as charting and charting features. Prices start at $399 and go up to approximately $699. The more expensive options in this range will give you options like plotting, which allows you to create plot points in your travels so you can easily revisit successful locations. I have used these features many times. Some templates will allow for the creation of maps, which is great. Creating your own maps will enable you to keep detailed records of your travels, highlighting areas you want to focus on next time or identifying hotspots you would like to visit again. The Deeper Pro 2 castable rig allows bathymetry charts from shore, which is a huge benefit to shore anglers and not available from any other castable rig. Depending on the placement of the transducer, mid-range models work great for most lakes and rivers. Some of the higher-end models are perfect for doing some inshore fishing and can also take you outdoors. Check the maximum depth and clarity to make sure you'll see more than a clump of indefinable slime at a depth of 600 feet. High Performance Models Fish finders in this range have everything you could imagine. Several models have the ability to control your trolling motor and even check the depth of your fishing equipment, depending on the brand of fishing gear you purchase. Features like CHIRP, Side Scan, Bottom Scan, Touch Screen, Active Imaging, High Performance Processors, Direct Network Access, Active Wi-Fi, and many more that could be listed here come either pre-installed or as available upgrades. When you get to the store, double check the packaging to make sure it comes with a power adapter or buy one separately. Many models from some of the biggest names don't include it in the high-performance base trim. Anglers who purchase these tend to have their favorite transducers and will purchase them separately anyway. Connecting a fish finder to my iPhone was completely new territory for me. I could see everything clearly as I fished from the front of the boat, 12 feet from my search screen. I can start and crank my trolling motor using my phone, which to me is everything the Jetsons promised to be in the future. If you can figure out the technology to make everything work, anyone can do it. Related Articles: Different Types of Fish Finders (Explained for Beginners) How FishFinder Works?
